What's a good golf score?

A good golf score is one that beats what golfers like you usually shoot. For a lot of people that means breaking 100, then 90. Golfers in the U.S. who keep score average about 94 for 18 holes, so if you're under that, you're beating the typical card.
Punk Head Pete

Pete saysEvery golfer has a buddy who "usually shoots in the 80s." He's right. He shot an 89 once, in 2019. He's been usually shooting it ever since.

The short answer, by the numbers

Here's where the real numbers land. Each one comes from a different group of golfers, so read the "who's counted" column before you compare yourself.

NumberWhat it isWho's counted
94Average 18-hole scoreU.S. golfers who regularly keep score (NGF, 2024)
Closer to 100NGF's estimate of the "probable average golfer" scoreAdds in golfers who don't keep score and those who take mulligans and gimmes
86.4Average 18-hole scoreShot Scope users in 2025, who track every shot with a GPS device
14.0Average Handicap Index for menU.S. golfers with an official Handicap Index (USGA, 2025)
28.8Average Handicap Index for womenSame group

Notice the spread. The more serious the group, the lower the number. People who strap a tracker to their clubs or keep an official handicap play more and score better than the golfer who plays twice a year with the in-laws. That's not a knock on anybody. It's just who shows up in the data.

The NGF also points out that more than half of golfers say they take scoring liberties: mulligans, breakfast balls, gimmes, no out of bounds. Their words, not mine: "Anything is possible with 5-foot gimmes and an eraser."

What's a good score for 18 holes?

Using the numbers above, here's a plain-English ladder for a par-72 course.

You shoot…What it means
Over 100Plenty of golfers live here. The NGF thinks the true average for everybody is close to it.
Under 100You're within a few strokes of the 94 average. Breaking 100 is the first big milestone.
Under 90About three in four Shot Scope users broke 90 at least once in 2025 (74.8%). Those are committed golfers, so this is a real accomplishment.
Under 80About a third of Shot Scope users did it at least once in 2025 (31.2%). The NGF says almost 1 in 10 golfers who keep score regularly shoot under 80.
Under 70Shot Scope says 1.9% of its users broke 70 in 2025. Rare air.

Two things to know about "broke 90 at least once." It counts your best round of the year, not your normal one. And it comes from golfers who track every shot, which is a group that plays a lot.

What's a good score for 9 holes?

There's no big public dataset for 9-hole scores the way there is for 18. So here's the simple version: a good 9-hole score is about half of a good 18-hole score.

  • Breaking 50 on nine is the 9-hole version of breaking 100.
  • Breaking 45 is the 9-hole version of breaking 90.
  • Par for nine holes is usually 35 or 36. Check the card.

That's arithmetic, not a stat. Your front nine and back nine can be a lot different, especially if one side has the water.

Punk Head Pete in his bucket hat

Pete saysMy front nine and my back nine have never once been the same golfer. One of them is fine. The other one is me.

What's a good score for a beginner?

Forget the averages for a while. Every number above comes from people who have played a lot of golf. Your first goal is simpler.

Pete's ladder for new golfers:

  1. Finish the round and count every stroke. That's a real score. Most golfers never write one down honestly.
  2. Play to a max score per hole. Lots of casual groups pick up at double par. Your total will be honest, and you'll keep up with the group. We covered how in How to keep score in golf.
  3. Beat your own last score. That's the only comparison that matters right now.
  4. Break 120, then 110, then 100. Each one is a real step. Breaking 100 puts you under the NGF's "probable average golfer" estimate.

Every golfer who's ever broken 80 started out writing down numbers in the 100s and 120s. Big numbers aren't a grade. They're just where everybody starts.

What's a good score for your handicap?

This is the best answer, because it compares you to golfers at your level. Shot Scope's data, published by Golf Monthly, shows what golfers at each handicap actually average.

HandicapAverage score vs. parOn a par-72 courseA good round for you
Scratch (0)+27474 or better
5+77979 or better
10+138585 or better
15+189090 or better
20+239595 or better
25+29101100 or better

Look at that scratch row. A scratch golfer averages 2 over par, not even par. That's because your handicap isn't your average. It's built from your best 8 rounds out of your last 20, so on a normal day everybody shoots a few strokes worse than their handicap says. We broke down the math in How is a golf handicap calculated?

Shot Scope's other benchmarks make the same point. A 25-handicap who makes fewer than eight double bogeys in a round is beating the average 25-handicap. Bad holes are normal. It's how many of them you string together.

Punk Head Pete

Pete saysSo the average guy with a handicap is a 14, shoots around 90, and tells everybody he's a 12. The data checks out.

How to shoot a better score (without touching your swing)

No swing tips here. These are all decisions, not mechanics. Pete's rules:

  • Kill the double bogeys. The gap between handicaps isn't birdies. It's blowup holes. Shot Scope's numbers show a 15-handicap makes about half as many double bogeys or worse per round as a 25-handicap.
  • Take your medicine. In the trees? Get it back to the fairway. A bogey beats a snowman. More on that in What's a snowman in golf?
  • Know your real distances. Most short approaches are a club-selection problem. See How far should you hit each club?
  • Aim for the fat part of the green. The pin tucked behind the bunker isn't your problem today.
  • Play the right tees. Shorter tees, more fun, better scores. Nobody hands out trophies for suffering.
  • Count every stroke. You can't get better at a number you're making up.

How the Pete Scorecard tracks your score

The Pete Scorecard runs in your phone's browser. Here's what it does and what it doesn't.

The Pete Scorecard season dashboard: Pete's take on a made-up golfer's season and a color grid of his nemesis holes
The season dashboard, from Dale's made-up season. Pete's take on your game, and the hole that eats you alive.

What it does

  • Par is already filled in, so a par is one tap.
  • Every 8 or worse is marked in red, and the snowman counter keeps your season total.
  • Every birdie gets circled and counted, so the good holes show up as loud as the bad ones.
  • The whole group, live, with Play together (free account). Keeping your own card needs no account.
  • Enter a finished round. Kept a paper card? Type it in after the round.
  • An unofficial handicap after 3 rounds, so you can use the handicap table above instead of guessing.
  • The Rounds tab shows every round hole by hole, and the season dashboard shows your nemesis holes and where your strokes go.
  • Settle the Bet handles the money, so a good score actually pays. See Skins and Nassau, explained.

What it doesn't do

  • It doesn't compare you to the national averages. It shows your numbers, not the NGF's or Shot Scope's.
  • It's not an official handicap. It's an unofficial handicap. For club tournaments or sanctioned events, you'll need an official Handicap Index through a golf club or association.
  • It only knows what you tap in. Mulligans you don't count don't show up. That one's on you.
